The Holy Spirit came because Jesus ascended into heaven and then the Father sent The Holy Spirit to earth. This Holy Spirit helps to give us understanding concerning Jesus Wisdom and counseling. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. John 14:26 |
As the Isaiah 9:6-7 prophecy unfolds we receive further revelation concerning the person that this prophecy is about. First we know that there is a Child to be born and that He is a gift which means the gift is unearned just like grace and mercy is unearned. We know that He will also have the title of King since the government will be upon His shoulders. Now we see that with that kingship comes a wonderful leadership and guidance (or counseling) for those who seek it.
The fulfillment of this prophecy comes to those who put their faith in Jesus as Messiah. Through His words, His advice and His actions we are given words of wisdom and counseling.

What does it mean for this person with the title "Wonderful Counselor" to be in our life's?
We must understand that a certain level of counseling is available just by reading Gods' word. Written by prophets and disciples of Christ these books and letters that make up the Bible today are full of information about God. This is what you need to know. Knowledge and understanding about God's will for us is in the Bible. The application of that knowledge and will is called wisdom. While the knowledge and understanding is available to everyone to one degree or another the wisdom on how to apply that comes from Jesus through the gift He sent, the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' words of wisdom and counsel still live today as guidelines to live and love by.
For those who accept Jesus' as their Messiah we can personally seek Him to help guide us in our everyday lives. Of course God still offers us free will, even after accepting Christ as Messiah and as followers of Christ sometimes we still make wrong decisions. That doesn't completely go away just because Jesus becomes the answer man. It does little good to know the answer if one is unwilling to act upon it. Thankfully, in the end at judgment time, it will be the righteous works of Jesus and not our own that God will look at as a barometer for salvation. In the meantime, our counselor is there if we choose to listen to Him.
This King will implement Supernatural Wisdom in discharging His office.(1)
This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great. (Isaiah 28:29)
One might consider looking at the hebrew (Pele) text here - Pele Yoetz - (wonderful Counselor) as a noun instead of an adjective. Literal interpretation may be wonder counselor. Pele in this context may indicate a wonder, a mysterious act of God, beyond total human grasp. This would make "wonder" an attribute of God, like holiness is. This divine title may therefore be translated wonderful counselor who partakes of the very nature of God.(2)

Counselor is sometimes interpreted as an advocate, like in a court room. Certainly Jesus would qualify as a wonderful counselor, a High Priest to represent us before the Father understanding all our needs.
