|
Old Testament Prophecy |
New Testament Fulfillment |
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7) |
Some prophecies come to an end once they are fulfilled. Other prophecies have more than one fulfillment, a short term historical fulfillment and a long term sometimes even everlasting fulfillment. In this prophecy we see that regardless of any short term fulfillment that can be partially applied the long term titles of the Messiah, His Kingship and Divinity will be everlasting.
There will be no end to the titles given here to the Messiah. In other words He will always be the Son the Father has given to us. He will always be a King because His kingdom has already begun and will continue forever. His wisdom is infinite meaning as we grow spiritually He gives us further revelation. He will always be a "Mighty God" meaning the Messiah has been, is now and will always be part of the God head (Father ,Son, Holy Spirit). He will always be a Father to His children. He will always provide a spiritual kind of peace when given the opportunity. The key to this peace is to give God the opportunity to bring it about in your heart through prayer, repentance and embracing our Messiah as the Prince of Peace.
The increased power of his government is not dependent on waging war, for there shall be peace in his days. (Abaranel)(1)
