Men of Israel, hear these words:
Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and
signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know
"Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of
God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom
God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible
that He should be held by it. |
Messiah will be resurrected from the dead. This passage is prophetically Messiah speaking in the first person (As in Psalm 22). It may have been written originally about David or one of his descendants, this Psalm finds its fulfillment in the resurrection of the Messiah.
The New Testament confirms in at least two places
that Psalm 16:10-11 is referring to Jesus resurrection. While making his Pentecostal
(Shavuot) address, Peter confirms that this Psalm is a Messianic Psalm (Acts
2-25-28, 31). Saul/Paul while giving words of encouragement to others at a
synagogue service, teaches that this Psalm was speaking about the Messiah
(Acts 13:35-37).
Probably quoting from the Septuagint, Paul doesn't seem to be meeting any objections from anyone that this Psalm should be viewed prophetical and applicable to the Messiah.
While on Earth, Jesus accomplished many things that no one else in history ever did. Even though He is viewed as the greatest Rabbi/Preacher and teacher ever to live, that is not proof of His Messiahship. Even though His death on the cross provided a way for all of mankind to receive salvation, that also is not proof of His Messiahship.
The greatest proof that Jesus was our Messiah, our savior and avenue for salvation is in His resurrection. This is the way that our Almighty Father in Heaven chose to show to the entire world His acceptance of Jesus' death on the cross being an acceptable substitution for our own spiritual death due to sin in our life. Since Jesus now lives, we know that He has conquered death. Through Him, and in Him, we can conquer death also and have eternal life. Praise the Lord!

Before Messiah could be raised from the dead He had to be crucified. This is what Psalm 22 taught.
How has God fulfilled this prophecy through King David's blood line? Who is the Holy One David is speaking about here? Will King David himself someday be resurrected? Most of the Messianic Psalms belong to King David's time period.
This Psalm is sometimes given the title of "Victory over death." King David foretold of Messiah being raised from the dead 1,000 years before Jesus was born. Belief in Jesus resurrection is mentioned in Romans 10:9-10 as being one of two things needed for salvation, with the other being to confession with your mouth the Lord Jesus. (Jewish theology would regard true confession as something that included genuine remorse for the act being confessed. In this case it would mean genuine remorse for the sins one had committed since Jesus had to pay the penalty of death for them). Many Bible scholars believe that Isaiah 49:7-8 and Job 19:25-26 also foretold of Messiahs resurrection. There is a link between Jonah being in the belly of a whale for three days and Jesus being dead for three days. This link is revealed to us in Matthew 12:40. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jonah's experience in the great fish (Jonah 1:17) is seen as a type for the coming resurrection. Some Rabbinical literature connects Psalm 16:11 with the four spices of the Lulav (Vayikra Rabba 30).
